Mortal Kombat 9 Review

Many older games at the moment are being remade and revamped in order to give a fresh breath of air to them and to try to kick start the franchises. Although, most of them are really bad and flop, Mortal Kombat was able to pull it off and create a game that is a strong rival to other beat ‘em ups.
A few people have had varied opinions on the game. The majority of people who have not tried it yet were put off by a few sorry excuses for games made before it, and most people like myself know that most games that are remade to try and bring back old fans fail miserably and ruin the memory for you. This, however, is not one of those cheaply made, low quality games that was created just to try and make a few bucks off of nostalgic fans.
Gameplay
Netherrealm studios have done a fantastic job in reinventing the old school feel to the game. This reiteration is now 2D, like the original, and plays a lot smoother than the previous iteration. The main attraction that I found was that you can pick up the pad and have fun without having to learn a lot of difficult combos and moves. The new special move implemented is very simple to execute as it only requires you to press the back two triggers.
A new game mode introduced is the challenge tower in which you have to complete 300 challenges to complete. The challenges get progressively harder and harder. You also get an alternative costume for Mileena.
Included in the challenge tower are a few mini-games like “test your might” and “test your sight”. These will give you in-game gold and allow you to unlock harder versions of these mini-games. The gold can be used to pass a challenge in the challenge tower so you can come back to it later and can also be used to purchase alternative costumes, movies, artwork, etc from the crypt. Online multiplayer is also a big improvement from the previous versions. As with most fighting games, the online aspect is full of people who disconnect when they are being beat.
One thing that Mortal Kombat has that I found very fun was their King of the Hill mode. This mode is basically a winner stays on. People will queue up and are able to watch the fights leading up to their turn. When you are in the queue you are represented by either an Xbox avatar or one of the Mortal Kombat avatars. Another small feature that adds to this game type is that when you are in the queue, you can have your avatar shout, boo, or cheer at the match, showing how you think the match is going.
Characters
This version has a smaller choice of characters at the start with the total at 27 for the xbox 360 and 28 for the PS3 (not including the 4 downloadable characters). The development team is very community focused as Netherealm Studios listens to the community and tries their best to bring our alternative costumes and new playable characters back that are popular with the fans.
There are a few familiar faces in this new Mortal Kombat even if you have never played the series before. Freddie Kruger form “Nightmare on Elm Street” is a playable character available for download, and Kratos from the “God of war” series is an exclusive playable character on the Playstation 3.
Most people get annoyed by the micro-transactions that companies are using these days to make some extra cash but I would rather this was the case as it keeps the developers bringing out new content and you really get the best possible gameplay experience.
Your characters statistics are now saved when you play your favourite characters, this will record how long you have played with that particular character and other things like how many fatalities and X-rays you have done.
Why should I chose this game over other beat ‘em up games?
I have played my fair share of fighting games and was a very big fan of Street Fighter and had fallen away from Mortal Kombat as a result of games like “Mortal Kombat Vs. DC,” which was, in a polite word, horrible.
The thing that gives street fighter such a good reputation is that the game is very easy to play, yet it is still very competitive. Mortal Kombat has adopted the same kind of idea with regards to this. The game is very easy to play and is also becoming quite popular in tournaments around the world.
Back in the day I was in love with both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat but, on this occasion I would choose Mortal Kombat over Super Street Fighter IV as it is something different. There is hours of fun involved in Mortal Kombat.
Gameplay – 4.5/5
The overall experience of the game is fantastic. There is very little I would change regarding the gameplay
Graphics – 4/5
The graphics in this game are phenomenal. Mortal Kombat has very realistic X-ray moves and the general graphics look fantastic compared to the previous games.
Balance – 4/5
The game is very balanced for tournament play as well as for casual play. There is not a single character that is the most powerful. All the characters have a counter to their game style and have different ways to play the same character.
Depth – 4.5/5
The game has a great depth to it with regards to the Krypt. There is a lot of character costumes and alternative artwork, etc to be unlocked. There is different difficulties available to play through the story mode and many achievements that keeps the game feeling like you can always pick up the pad and have something to do.
Community – 5/5
Mortal Kombat has one of the best communities and one of the most listened to communities in any game I have played. The developers listen to what the community wants and tries their best to work towards making those wishes a reality.
